Dell Precision Workstation 530

The Dell Precision Workstation 530 is a top-flight performer. Dell provides an impressive range of support options and spends much time and effort on system design—warranting our Editor's Choice.

Thanks in no small part to its 10,000-rpm 35GB Ultra160 SCSI drive, the Precision 530 performed well on our benchmark tests. In fact, on most tests, it was either the top-performing system or within a decent margin of the best performer. The chassis is completely tool-free, from easy-mount disk drives and screwless PCI slots to the snap-in, Dell-designed motherboard. Front-mounted USB and IEEE 1394 connectors are another nice touch.

In fairness, moving the power supply out of the main chassis moves a source of heat away from sensitive internal components, and the system as a whole is unusually quiet. Dell recommends carefully turning the tower on its side before opening the door to avoid bending the motherboard—and we concur.

Overall, the Precision 530 is a top-notch system. Just be careful when opening the door.
